As a Physical Therapist, I have worked in a few different settings. Among my favorite were the acute care hospital and the skilled nursing facility. In the hospital, there is always something happening. Between fresh orthopedic surgeries and purulent brown recluse spider bites, one never knows what the day will hold when he/she walks in the building. In the nursing home, one comes to appreciate the many personalities and backgrounds that exist under one roof. A group of people who were previously strangers becomes a family, with all the little quirks and nuances that relationship holds. I always considered myself lucky to be a part of the day to day life within such establishments. Not only did I get to help many of the patients or residents get back up on their feet, but I formed wonderful relationships with the other staff members and with my patients. I lived across the country from my own family but was able to care for someone else’s grandparents, just as I hope someone would treat my own.
Working in healthcare, one must balance the need to be productive, ethical, and a part of a team. When we are employed by supportive organizations this is not as much of a challenge, and work really is fun (most of the time). Dani, one of the recruiters, helped me find a position that suited my needs. She handled everything gracefully and was in excellent contact with me, every step of the way. I really felt as if she looked out for me, which is nice when wading out into unknown waters. I think the most important thing when moving for a new job is to keep an open mind. Be open to change and welcome the new knowledge and experiences that lie ahead of you!
